An American global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants known to the world as Burger King(BK), headquartered in Miami-Dade County, Florida, was founded in 1953 as InstaBurger King but after InstaBurger King ran into financial problems in 1954, it was renamed as what we now a day’s call Burger King. Burger King corporation is the second largest fast food restaurant in America after McDonald’s. The company has more than 10,400 restaurants in all 50 states along with 56 countries worldwide. More than 15.7 million customers, are served daily, by the company and an average of 2.4 billion hamburgers are sold annually worldwide.

Origin of Burger King

Burger King originally founded as InstaBurger King was founded in 1953 by Keith J. Crammer and his wife’s uncle Mathew Burns. It started with Crammer and Burns purchasing the rights to two pieces of equipment called the “insta” machines which led to the opening of their first restaurant based around “ Insta-Broiler”, a cooking device. This experiment was successful to such an extent that they made it mandatory for all of their franchises to use this device. In 1959 a turn of events took place, due to some financial crisis the company was bought by its Miami, Florida franchisers. James McLamore and David R. Edgerton. After that a corporate restructuring of the chain was initiated. The company was run, independently, by its Miami based owners for the next eight years but in 1967 it was sold to the Pillsbury company. In the late 1970’s to early 1980’s the Pillsbury management tried its hands several times at restructuring the company. The most prominent change could be seen in 1978 when Burger King hired McDonald’s executive, Donald N. Smith, to help refurbish the company but Smith in 1980 left Burger King for PepsiCo, mainly because of the decline in sales of Burger King. One of the most prominent initiatives taken by the company was the advertising campaign featuring a series of “attack ads” against its competitors. This initiative started a competitive war between the top burger chains of that era, sometimes known as “The Burger Wars”. The next few decades witnessed the fall of the Burger King and its feeble attempts to rise but no conclusive results could be deduced from any attempt made by the company to restore itself.

A major change came in the twenty-first century. In the twenty-first century we see the company standing back on its feet after it was purchased from its, then owner, Diageo by a group of investment firms led by TPG Capital for US $1.5 billion in 2002. The initiatives took by the new owners proved quite fruitful in energizing the company.

Products

When Burger King was initiated to world as InstaBurger King in 1953, its menu was quite basic with hamburgers, French fries, soft drinks, desserts and milkshakes. But in 1954 the company did not only get its name changed but it went through an entire refurbishment of every inch of the company, the most attractive thing for the consumer, that was arranged by the renovators, was the introduction of the “Whopper Sandwich” in 1957. The Burger King expanded its menu by adding few more items most influential of whom was the Whopper Sandwich, which later became the signature item of the Burger King chain. Since its inception the Burger King has become synonymous with the Whopper. Its popularity grew to such an extent that the company event named its kiosk-style restaurants as Whopper Bars.

In 1978, the Donald Smith’s era of Burger King’s restoration a Burger King Sandwich Specialty line was incorporated in the main menu in 1979, it in effect gave a new touch to the menu with moving away from the typical hamburgers to new types of food, especially non-hamburger sandwiches, including new chicken and fish items. In addition to this Smith also contributed to the company with a breakfast product-line, something which, till this time, the Burger King has not ventured into, but apart from the Croissan’Wich in 1983, the breakfast menu remained quite identical to its arch-rival, McDonald’s, menu. In addition to this the revamping of the company introduced Bk’s “Am Express” product line. Which incorporated several new products to the main menu such as French toast sticks and mini muffins.

As the company expanded, locally and internationally, it incorporated various localized items into its menu to conform to the regional, cultural and religious belief systems. For example, in various countries such as India people are vegetarian so in such countries a localized version of the same products introduced, meat was replaced with vegetables, on in Muslim countries halal products were introduced, which was quite an impressive tactic to capture the consumers interest. Along with the interest, such efforts make the consumer attach psychologically or emotionally with the company. It was an applaudable initiative taken by the company to win the consumers’ trust.

In 1993, BK entered a multi-tiered value menu, to compete with its then competitor Wendy’s, with items priced at 99cent, US $1.99 and $2.99. this tier menu was replaced by much more standard value menu in 1998.in 2002 and 2006 the menu was again revamped adding and replacing several items. In 2010, with the purchasing of the company a restructuring of the menu was again conducted which made the menu moved away from certain male-dominated items that had prevailed under the previous ownerships. Approximately 20 new products were researched and reformulated. Ultimately trimmed down to 10 items, BK began installing the items in the US throughout 2011-2012 with the official roll out beginning April 2012. Several food items were included such as smoothies, frappes, ice-creams etc.

After getting to know about this one can say that Burger King does not only think about its customers but about those people as well who work for the company. Burger King Customer Satisfaction Survey

My Burger King Experience Survey begins by asking the specific restaurant number located on your receipt. Then it proceeds and asks for the survey code located at the bottom of the receipt. This is the basic information it asks of the customer who has visited the restaurant branch. Then the actual survey begins. It begins with basic questions like what your order type was whether it was drive-through, dine-in, carry-out, then it proceeds to ask about the company you had when you paced the order i.e., how many people were with you. Furthermore, it asks whether you ordered for a child under the age of 13. After getting the information about the customer they are dealing with they request the customer to rate the overall satisfaction with their experience such as what was their level of satisfaction with the temperature of the food they received, the friendliness of the team, the ease of planning the order, the speed of the service in addition to this information about cleanliness of the environment and the value of money has been requested for a survey.

After this, the Burger King Customer Satisfaction Survey analyses the likelihood of your return to the restaurant in the next 30 days or whether you would recommend other people to visit the restaurant in the next 30 days. It further asks about the quality of food you received at the restaurant such whether the fires, sandwich or any other food you ordered was fresh or of high quality. Then it requires the customers to write in at least 1200 words about the reason behind their satisfaction with the restaurant.

Furthering, it asks you about the specific items, out of the menu you ordered. After this it asks about whether a team member told you about this survey or did you use a coupon on this visit. After this it asks questions about the conduct of the staff with you such as whether they were polite or not etc. then it asks about where you were coming from and going to after your visit to the restaurant but its not mandatory to answer. Then it asks about the number of times you visit the restaurant per week and how much you spend on this visit n why do you prefer to visit this branch of the restaurant. Then towards the end it asks you to indicate the location you identify as closer on the map. At the end it asks you to validate your offer and provides you with a validation code which is to be written on your receipt which you can use on your next visit within 30 days and only one survey can be conducted for one household within 30 days period.

Conclusively, this effort of the Burger King organization should be appreciated as they are contributing ample time out of their schedule to improve their services as per people’s expectations and preferences.
